This collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and speeches. The correspondents include Hooper writing to someone identified only as Jackson; William F. Samford to Mathew P. Blue; and other letters to and from Bolling Hall, C. C. Comer, Jeremiah Clemens, and A. J. Pickett. The subjects discussed include States rights, the political scene in Ala., the status of the Democratic Party, relations between Ala. politicians, the U. S. Congress, the Ala. gubernatorialship, and the possible establishment of a new newspaper, the "True Union Office." Also included are two speeches; one concerning journalists, the other by Jeremiah Clemens on unionism.

Clemens was born on 1814 Dec. 28, in Huntsville, Madison Co., Ala. He attended LaGrange College and graduated from the University of Ala. in 1833. He studied law at Transylvania University, was admitted to the bar in 1834, married Mary Read and opened a law office in Huntsville. Johnson Jones Hooper was an author and editor who began his writing career in Charleston, S.C. Hooper then moved to Alabama where he read law and edited several newspapers. In 1852 he established the "Whig" Montgomery Mail and edited it until 1861 when he was elected secretary of the Provisional Confederate Congress. Hooper also authored "Some Adventures of Capt.
